There are many benefits to becoming an armed security guard. First and foremost, it pays better than regular security work. Due to the extra training involved and potential risk that you incur, you will be financially compensated. Some other benefits include access to more prestigious, higher profile jobs. Many government security positions, as well as casino and armored car transport, require you to carry a firearm security guards for hire. Lastly, you have the protection and ease of mind that comes along with carrying a gun. The threat of lethal force is usually enough to scare off all but the most brazen of criminals.

Before you start your training to become an armed security guard it is a good idea to gain some experience in some unarmed positions. This will benefit you in two ways. Firstly, it will give you an understanding of how the security industry works and what kinds of tasks and challenges await you. Secondly, it will provide you with some great experience for your resume when it comes time to apply for that armed position.

After you have served as a security guard for awhile (recommended 6 months to a year), you will be ready to get started with firearms training. Depending on which country you live in, you will want to check the local regulations and get in touch with the licensing office first to find out how to apply. If you are located in the United States, you should check your state’s criminal justice or bureau of security website for information on where the testing will take place and how to apply.

Most states require a 40-50 hour firearms training course which includes classroom time, firing range experience with various guns and a written examination at the end. You will learn everything from how to carry your gun and draw it properly to retention so that it cannot be taken from you. You will learn how to fire it accurately and how to quickly reload. Lastly you will learn how to take care of your gun and various other self defense procedures to supplement your training.
